Very leary about using the internet for unseen purchases as I have almost no experience in it. Very pleased with the entire process and the credit card charge was for the exact amount. In my opinion, Uniden should have created their BCD996T control software using Cygwin/Gtk to compile all, Win32,Linux & Mac OSX binaries. Instead, Uniden only provides Win32 binaries of their software. (Not to fret, Linux/Mac users can run the BCD996T scanner software under Wine. As someone who owns a couple of vintage ELECTRA Bearcat scanners (The ones made in US, not China as they are today) I was looking for a scanner that was also a clock radio. As a scanner, it does everything it should for analog scanning and has SAME weather alert which works well. I can receive police, fire, marine, ham radio, am, fm, tv, weather and even pick up local cordless phone conversations. The controls are easy to use and the unit is fairly easy to set up. I wish it came with a beefier antenna but I'm able to get nearly 300 miles of reception of ham radio so its not bad straight out of the box.
