I wanted to have 4 devices statically plugged into it when I 'dock' my computer at home, and still have a couple ports for dynamic use. Two of the devices were my iPhone and a Western Digital MyBook 250gb HD, both of which worked only on the MacBook's native ports and not through a passive hub (even though the MyBook has its own power source - seems odd). Granted, there are two major categories (powered and unpowered/passive) but beyond that, differences are mainly in how convenient the hub is structured rather than actual performance issues. This Belkin model scores very well when it comes to convenience. The ports are nicely spaced so you can use all of them even if you have a bulky connector, such as a large thumb drive.
